M3 crash: Horror Heathrow four-car pile-up leaves two dead and motorway shut

Two people have died in a devastating four-car crash near Heathrow Airport in the early hours of today.

A 69-year-old driver and his 67-year-old female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene of the pile-up.

The crash, at roughly 12.45am, was near Heathrow Airport, with an air ambulance landing on the eastbound carriageway causing severe disruption in both directions.

The smash has caused the M3 to close from the west between junction 3 and junction 2 to the M25.

A spokesperson for Surrey Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses for a single vehicle collision on the M3 this morning (20 July), after a car collided with the central reservation at around 12.45am.

"Sadly, the driver, a 69-year-old man, and the passenger, a 67-year-old woman, were both declared dead the scene. Their next of kin are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

"The collision took place between junctions 2 and 3 (westbound towards Lightwater) and the carriageway will remain shut for at least a few more hours.

"The eastbound carriageway has now re-opened two lanes."

The M3 remains closed westbound between junctions 2 and 3 to allow for police collision investigations to take place following the serious crash.

Two out of four lanes are also closed eastbound, with delays of 40 minutes on approach.

The eastbound carriageway was closed earlier after an air ambulance landed following the collision.
