M1 police statement after 'serious' 5-car crash closed road between J27 and J28

The M1 in Nottinghamshire has re-opened after a 'serious' crash overnight. The road was closed southbound between Junction 28, near Matlock and Junction 27, near Mansfield due to a collision.

National Highways East Midlands first reported the crash at 9.27pm on Friday, June 9. It said: "The M1 remains closed southbound between J28 (Matlock) & J27 (Mansfield) following a serious collision."

Derbyshire police attended the incident and remained on site for investigations. National Highways issued an update at 1.11am on Saturday, June 10 informing commuters that the road remained closed.

Traffic information service Inrix reported: "M1 Southbound blocked, queueing traffic due to accident, five vehicles involved from J28 A38 ( Alfreton / Mansfield) to J27 A608 Mansfield Road (Hucknall / Underwood). Northbound traffic has been released." The stretch of road re-opened at 6.31am.

In a tweet, it said: "Investigation work complete and the #M1 has reopened southbound between J28 (#Matlock) and J27 (#Mansfield) following yesterday evening's serious collision. Traffic flowing freely, safe onwards journey."

A Derbyshire police spokesperson added: "The M1 southbound between J28 and J27 has recently re-opened. It may take a little while for any build up of traffic to clear."
