A motorist driving on the M1 was caught red-handed by an off-duty police officer. The driver attempted to exit junction 21 before changing their mind in the last moment.
The video depicts the exact moment when the motorist cut through the double solid white lines and drove away in his Volvo. They did not know however that an off-duty officer was two cars behind, filming the dangerous manoeuvre on dashcam footage.
Sharing the footage to social media, Leicestershire Police's Roads Policing Unit said: "Off duty and Driver decides he doesn’t need to conform to double solid white lines exiting m1 J21 and cuts across putting themselves and other road users [at risk]. #why?"
The officer confirmed that the driver would face action. A second tweet read: "Yes got the number plates and a notice of intended prosecution Section 172 notice will be dispatched!"
Other social media users were quick to call out the incident on Twitter, with one saying "There's no excuse for it."
Another user commented: "Sadly general state across UK need more unmarked RPU although some are that thick it wouldn’t matter if you were in a marked x5."
But Leicestershire Police's Roads Policing Unit added: "I was off duty at the time in my own car so the driver was driving how they normally would have."
