Traffic on a major stretch of the M1 has been brought to a "standstill" amid continued travel disruption faced by those making their way to the Download festival. Many of those on their way to the Donington Park rock festival reported delays of more than two hours on Wednesday (June 7).
The campsites and campervan field for the festival opened at noon on Wednesday, with the entertainment taking place between Thursday and Sunday. Metallica, Bring Me the Horizon and Slipknot are all headlining the event.
Festival organisers apologised to customers following Wednesday's disruption, with the festival manager saying they had been working with the local authority and transport agencies to "minimise" delays. People were advised only to use the M1 and A50, rather than using the A453.

Traffic on Thursday (June 8) initially appeared to be coping well, but congestion then began to build throughout the morning. In an updated statement, published at around 12.40pm, the East Midlands division of National Highways said: "Traffic is now at a standstill at the M1 J24 roundabout including on the north and southbound exit slip roads.
"A453 southbound is also heavily congested, with traffic also building on the A50 east and westbound at J1. Allow extra journey time for Download and East Midlands Airport."
