M&S shoppers divided over new £40 midaxi dress that 'looks like a dressing gown'

A new £40 dress from Marks and Spencer has caused quite the commotion on social media after it left shoppers extremely divided.

The high-street retailer is selling a new white and red floral print midaxi dress for the summer weather, but some shoppers can't agree if it is "beautiful" or "looks like a dressing gown."

Shoppers took to social media to voice their rather mixed opinions on the printed dress after the retailer shared a snap of it themselves.

The drama unfolded after the high-street giant shared the snap to Facebook, which features one of their insiders - Sam Briones from Aberdeen - modelling the new printed dress.

Insiders are M&S employees who share how shoppers can style the latest products you can find in-stores, and it looks like shoppers couldn't agree this time around.

M&S captioned the snap: "The sun is out, and so is our new favourite colour combo. @marksandspencer_sam. #MyMarks."

The post quickly racked up hundreds of differing comments from shoppers who either loved it, hated it, or just wanted others to stop complaining.

"Out for a stroll in her dressing gown again!", joked one shopper.

"Summer dressing gown", commented a second.

"Just like my nighty", said another.

Quite a few other shoppers also took issue with the length, claiming that it wasn't suitable for the summer weather or petite people.

"High buttoned collar n ankle length for summer??", questioned one.

"When the weather is warm/hot I like to let my legs feel the sunshine . Vitamin D is so important", said another.

However, not everyone was a critic, with some shoppers being a lot more positive about the "lovely" dress.

"That’s beautiful. Love the colours", praised one shopper.

"Lovely, just perfect for Spring into summer", said another positive shopper.

"Love this dress", said a third.

Not only were some shoppers quick to defend the dress, but they were also quick to defend the retailer from the harsh criticism they have been receiving recently.

"I can't understand why some people have to make nasty comments. I love this dress and think she looks lovely. M&S have some lovely clothes in their stores I might not like them all but I like a lot of them. Surely that's as it should be", claimed one shopper.

M&S' £40 Floral Tie Front Midaxi Dress is available online and in-stores now.
