M&S Bank Arena investigating overcrowding at Jamie Webster gig

An investigation has been launched after reports of overcrowding at Jamie Webster's gig at the M&S Bank Arena.

The Liverpool-born singer sold out the arena on Saturday night (November 19). Fans attending the gig reported chaotic scenes, including congestion at entrances and at bars, as thousands of people arrived to watch the homecoming show.

An attendee told the ECHO they queued for 45 minutes to enter the arena and claimed producing digital tickets resulted in a message of 'no entry', but the ticket holders were allowed into the venue anyway. The person also said there was a 45 minute wait at a bar.

Another attendee said they were "packed into the bar". ECHO reporter Ben Haslam attended the show and said Jamie addressed the fans from the stage, urging them to take care of each other.

ACC Liverpool Group, which runs the arena, said staff received reports of crowd congestion at the bars, but this was resolved and people were dispersed. Merseyside Police were also called to the concert to deal with a report of a concern for safety. This incident was dealt with and the show was deemed safe to continue.

The arena insists that tickets were checked rigorously and appropriate checks were made on the night.

Faye Dyer, MD at ACC Liverpool Group, told the ECHO: "On Saturday night we hosted a very busy concert at the arena. There were reports of overcrowding at one of the floor bars, however the crowd congestion was resolved and people were dispersed.

"Merseyside Police received a report of concern for safety at the venue just before 9.30pm and attended the venue for a short period whilst our events security dealt with the incident. The event was deemed safe to continue. The process for checking tickets is a rigorous one and all appropriate checks were made on the night. The safety of our customers is of the utmost importance, we take any incident seriously and a detailed investigation has already begun."

Merseyside Police have been contacted for comment. Jamie Webster's management have been approached for comment but told the ECHO they will not make any statement until the full course of events is fully understood.
