Lyons crime gang 'shattered' as grandad David dies after fall outside house

A senior family member of the notorious Lyons gang has died after falling outside his home in Cumbernauld.

David Lyons passed away in hospital after being found shortly after midnight on Saturday, it is believed he suffered a heart attack that may have been triggered by a serious head injury.

A source told the Daily Record the 63-year-old was taken to Monklands General Hospital in Airdrie by family members, where he lost his fight for life.

A hospital insider claims that around 60 people visited the grandfather's bedside, including his son Paul Lyons, who was escorted from prison where he is serving time for a road rage killing.

The grandfather ran Applerow Motors in Possil, where in 2006 hitmen Raymond Anderson and James McDonald shot at family members.

Michael Lyons died, but Steven Lyons and gangster Robert Pickett survived.

Anderson and McDonald were later found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow in 2008 and each jailed for a record 35 years.

The source said David Lyon's death has rocked the family, adding: "Everyone in the Lyons family looked up to David. His sudden death has left them shattered.".
