Lyon boss knows his side scored at the 'worst possible moment' for Rangers

Pierre Sage has admitted that Lyon were fortunate not to end up a goal or two behind before they went on to sink Rangers at Ibrox.

The Scottish Premiership side came out the traps positively and threatened Lyon's 18-yard box on several occasions. James Tavernier didn't have the prowess to convert beyond Lucas Perri from close-range in the opening exchanges and Vaclav Cerny spurred an opportunity that looked easier to miss before Man of the Match, Malick Fofana scored the games opener.

Tom Lawrence responded for Rangers with an important equaliser but it was the French outfit who would go on to win the UEFA Europa League clash at ease in the end.

Veteran striker Alexander Lacazette restored the lead then powered home a third before half-time, leaving Butland stranded. And Fofana rounded off the scoring on 55 minutes...but it really could've been much more.

"Our backs were up against the walls in the first 10 mins," the Lyon head coach said in his post match press conference.

"Rangers could have taken the lead and would have deserved it. But we scored just after they equalised and that was the worst possible moment for them. Then we were able to get a third just before half-time and that killed the game.

"We were able to score in really decisive moments and that had a big impact on the opponents psychology.”

Asked about the quality showing produced by Fofana, Sage added: "He scored two but could have had a hat-trick. He's a really big talent."
