Lynx Marmite-scented body spray reduced to 47p as shoppers call it ‘the worst thing ever invented’

Deodorants are supposed to make you smell fresher - but how would you like to give your armpits an eau de Marmite instead?

In what was possibly one of the most unexpected crossovers in history, Lynx joined forces with Marmite to launch a fragrance that combined the sandalwood scent of Lynx Africa with the savoury spread in a body spray. Lynx dubbed the result the “scent of the century”.

The scent actually came out back in 2020 to mark 25 years of Lynx Africa, and is also available as a shower gel for anyone who’s interested. But some shoppers have recently been sharing their horrified reactions after spotting it for the first time.

The deodorant caught the eye of the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group on Facebook , where one user pointed out that it had been reduced at Superdrug from its usual price of £4.75 down to just 47p. No, we can’t imagine why either.

Some who had braved a sniff of the product were quick to share their thoughts, with more than one shopper saying that it smelled “like sick”.

One person wrote in the Facebook comments: “I saw it in Sainsbury’s the other day and thought I’d smell it - the biggest mistake ever.”

“Do yourself a favour and avoid it,” a shopper advised after testing it out in the supermarket. “You can use it to repel bugs.”

Another woman shared that the spray definitely had the power of attraction - but not for the intended species. “My husband said all the dogs in town started following him - he smelt like a walking sandwich,” she wrote.

“I’m guessing the huge price reduction tells its own tale?” another added. “I love Marmite, but I’m not sure I’d want my man to smell like it.”

Other verdicts pulled no punches. “I once came upon the corpse of a long dead sheep,” one person wrote alongside a one-star review. “This transported me back to that moment.”

But you’d expect anything with Marmite to split opinion - and oddly enough the deodorant has several five-star reviews on Superdrug’s website. “It has a pleasant savoury aroma and is definitely unique!” one person wrote.

Although you may want to take some of those glowing reviews with a pinch of salt. “Great at repelling werewolves,” another reviewer wrote. “Didn’t help with the selkie though.”
