David Martindale admits he was once left in disbelief by Lyndon Dykes - who had no idea who Paul Gascoigne was after bumping into him in Tenerife.
The Aussie born Scot was given his break by Martindale at Livingston, who brought him in from Queen of the South in 2019 and gave him the platform to earn his move south to QPR. He's also become one of Steve Clarke's star men as he enjoys an incredible late bloom, having only started playing football in his late teens.
So sparse was his knowledge of the sport that Martindale revealed he didn't even know he was looking at Scottish football royalty when Gascoigne was staying in their hotel while on pre-season duty. Martindale will reunite with his former striker on Tuesday night as Livingston take on QPR and he revealed Dykes' hilarious reaction after a chance encounter with the Rangers hero while on pre-season duty in 2019.
He told the Scottish Daily Mail : "Lyndon was a late developer. He was really late in his career when he started to take football seriously and he knew nothing about football, genuinely nothing.
"I remember the first year he was in the Premiership with Livingston, we were over in Tenerife and Gazza was staying at the hotel. I said to him: 'Look, it's Gazza!' and Lyndon looked at me and said: 'Who's Gazza?' That's how late Lyndon was into football!
"But football came so naturally to Lyndon and, suddenly, he was taking Scotland to the Euros and playing in the English Championship with QPR."
