Lynden Gooch returned to the Sunderland side as one of five changes to the XI that started the Black Cats' FA Cup third round win at Shrewsbury Town last weekend. Gooch came into the side in place of Bailey Wright, who dropped to the bench.
Anthony Patterson was restored in goal where he took the place of Alex Bass. After recovering from illness, Corry Evans returned in midfield in place of Abdoullah Ba, while Jack Clarke returned at the expense of Edouard Michut.
And Ross Stewart started up front, taking the place of Jewison Bennette. Tony Mowbray included Danny Batth and Leon Dajaku amongst the subs after they had recovered from injuries.
