Authorities in Georgia have announced the arrest of a man who allegedly raped and kidnapped a female Lyft driver before stealing her car. The incident took place on March 11 when the ride-share driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, picked up the passenger, identified as Demarcus Johnson. According to Alpharetta Police, Johnson stole the victim's vehicle, kidnapped her, and sexually assaulted her.
Police revealed that Johnson gave the victim a sedative during the ordeal. Following an investigation, Johnson was apprehended on Friday and now faces charges of rape, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and theft by taking, all of which are serious felonies.
Reports indicate that the victim woke up in an unfamiliar hotel room with her car missing. Captain R. Andrew Splawn of the Alpharetta Police stated that Johnson and the victim had initially hit it off during the Lyft ride and decided to have drinks together. However, the victim has no recollection of the events that transpired that evening.
Further analysis revealed that the victim's toxicology report showed the presence of prescription narcotics that she had not been prescribed and did not knowingly consume. In response to the incident, a Lyft spokesperson emphasized the company's commitment to safety, condemning Johnson's alleged actions as 'reprehensible.'
The spokesperson stated, 'Safety is fundamental to Lyft, and the behavior described is reprehensible and has no place in our community or anywhere in society.' Lyft confirmed that the rider's account has been permanently removed from the platform and that they are cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation.
Captain Splawn advised both ride-share drivers and passengers to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times. He stressed the importance of staying alert whether operating a vehicle or utilizing ride-sharing services as a patron.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing as authorities work to gather more information surrounding the case.
