Thieves have used a car to smash into a high-end fashion store, the latest in a spate of ram raids targeting luxury shops in the heart of a major capital city.

Offenders used a grey Hilux to break through the front windows of the British luxury fashion house Burberry on Melbourne's premium shopping district on Collins Street, about 6am on Wednesday.

No one was inside and the thieves were later seen fleeing in a grey BMW, Victoria Police said.

Investigators are yet to determine if any of the designer goods were stolen.

However, several shelves were left bare, with clothes strewn on the ground.
