Luxury Edinburgh cheese shop in plush area on sale after booming since pandemic

A pair of artisan cheese shops are on sale for offers over £300,000 with one unit located in an affluent area of the capital.

George Mewes Cheese has one store located on Dean Park Street in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh while the other store is located on Byres road in Glasgow’s affluent West End.

The owners have said that they are looking to sell the business whilst it is in a strong position having recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic. Both units look to be advertised for offers over £300,000 with the current owners saying that their combined gross profit is £352,358.

The Edinburgh shop is a ground floor premise currently held on a lease with a passing rent of £17,125 excl. VAT. It sits at the bottom of a four-story terraced tenement and contains a shop floor, office, prep area, toilet and cool store.

The shop prides itself on having ideal cave-like conditions for cheese, with the owners claiming that it was the first of its kind in Scotland. This is achieved by using state of the art refrigeration, counters and shelves made from Welsh slate and spruce and a foot deep concrete floor.

The large service area to the left of the store comes with a full length counter housing a variety of cheeses behind clear Perspex.

Shelving underneath holds oatcakes and chutneys while larger wooden shelving to the rear displays a selection of snacks and accompaniments. To the right of the shop is more shelving with a larger selection of chutneys, oatcakes, preserves and pastas.

A large open-faced display chiller has more cheese and a selection of cooked and cured meats. While a large bench is located in the middle of the space displaying fresh eggs for sale and other stock from around the shop.

Christie & Co., who are advertising the property on RightMove, describe it in the brochure as: “With our client opening his first shop in Glasgow in 2010, followed by Edinburgh in 2015, he has spent thirteen years building an award winning business that sources the finest cheeses from across Europe.

“The main stockist for Hervé Mons, a top affineur based in France, they also work with British based affineur Neal’s Yard of London, who encourage and nurture Britain and Irelands finest small producers. While continuing to serve the general public across two sites, our client has also built a reputation as a wholesaler currently supplying fantastic institutions across the United Kingdom.

“With the business having navigated through the COVID pandemic and now generating consistently high turnover, our client believes the time is right to find a new owner to continue and build on the success so far. The two sites are both located in popular shopping areas in Scotland’s two biggest cities and as such have built up a loyal returning customer base to accompany the passing trade they receive.

“With online deliveries continuing to be popular and the wholesale department strong, this is a wonderful time for a new operator to take over a well-performing business, while still having ample opportunity to grow turnover and profits by streamlining operations further. A new owner could also look to introduce alcohol sales to the Edinburgh shop (Glasgow currently has a full alcohol licence, granted early 2023).

“Obtaining an alcohol licence would immediately increase in-store sales, improving and complementing the offering. We believe this fantastic opportunity and business should be viewed to appreciate it fully, with our client open to meeting interested parties.”
