Luton Town sign midfielder Ross Barkley on free transfer

Former Everton and Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley has joined recently promoted Premier League club Luton Town on a free transfer, the club announced on Wednesday.

Barkley, who made 33 England appearances, spent last season at Ligue 1 club Nice, and the 29-year-old stated he was looking forward to returning to English football.

"Why Luton? Going from the Conference to the Premier League is a great story and for me personally to be back in the Premier League, it's great motivation," Barkley said in a statement.

Last season, he appeared in 28 games for Nice in all competitions, scoring four times. Barkley previously played almost 200 Premier League games for Everton and Chelsea, scoring 29 goals.

Barkley is a welcome addition to boss Rob Edwards' squad as Luton Town make their Premier League debut.

"Ross brings loads of experience at the top level, has international experience and brings an x-factor," Edwards said.

"He gives us something different, he has that ability to make something out of nothing and we need that in the Premier League."

Barkley will wear number six and might make his debut for Luton Town against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
