Luton Town's Rob Edwards on Cody Drameh interest and focus amid uncertain Leeds United future

Luton Town boss Rob Edwards insists Cody Drameh is focused on the job at hand rather than his future right now. The Leeds United right-back joined the Hatters in January on a loan deal until the end of the season and his performances have played a key role in the club’s push for promotion from the Championship.

With four games to go until the end of the season, Luton are third in the league and they know a win over Reading on Wednesday will leave them assured of least a play-off place. As such, while it seems unlikely that they will be able to surpass Sheffield United to claim second at this late stage, hopes of winning promotion to the Premier League are still very much alive.

That challenge is dominating the Edwards’ thoughts and he believes the same can be said for Drameh, despite the uncertainty that summer may bring. Drameh will have just one season remaining on his contract at Leeds when his loan at Kenilworth Road comes to an end and there has already been plenty of speculation about his next step as he chases senior minutes.

The 21-year-old spent a majority of the opening half of the season playing in Leeds’ under-21 side and it seems there is no guarantee that he will get the first-team game time he craves at Elland Road next season, which raises the possibility of a move away from the club in the summer.

Luton would be keen on making his loan switch permanent should he be made available and if the numbers made sense, but they know they would face competition for his signature. Edwards, though, is prepared to leave such talk until the end of the season.

“It’s a difficult one to talk about that at the moment,” he said, as per Luton Today. “Clearly we really like him, that’s obvious, he’s playing every week for us and playing really well.

"Of course we are always looking to the future and that’s part of my job as well, along with people I’m working with above and the recruitment team and everyone, but there is a here and a now, and there is a focus on these next few games. That I think is what Cody’s big focus is as well.

"It’s just the here and the now, and the next game and keeping his performance levels really high. I think his future will get sorted out. He’s not going to be short of options if it’s not Leeds, but we’ll see.”

On Drameh’s level of performance, Edwards added: “We’ve been delighted with him since he walked through the door.

"He’s a young player, but to settle into a new club – such a tight-knit group as well – I think our lads will welcome anyone new into the group really well, but he’s settled so fast and his performances are just getting better. He is showing more and more confidence, more belief, more physicality in his game as well. He is a young player that has got a real bright future."
