Paul Watson's long-awaited appointment as sporting director at Swansea City has finally been officially confirmed.
Watson, who arguably helped lay down the foundations for Luton Town's sensational promotion to the Premier League during his five years at the club, had been lined up to take the role since the end of April, amid a significant reshuffle of the club's hierarchy. Andy Coleman has since been made the club's new chairman, while Julian Winter has left his post as chief executive.
Manager Russell Martin has also moved on, completing a move to Southampton last week, with Michael Duff taking his place in the dugout.
After five successful years with Luton, Watson is set to take on responsibility for all football operations at the Swansea.com Stadium, and will work closely with Coleman, Duff and head of football operations Josh Marsh.
Player recruitment will be the key part of his remit, with the Swans facing up to a potentially busy transfer window ahead of the new season.
Watson will subsequently oversee all football departments, including the academy, sports science, medical and analysis, and will also join the club’s senior management team.
Commenting on the appointment, Swans chairman Coleman said: “In any business, it is rare to find someone who is universally praised for their character and capabilities. Paul is one of those few people.
“He is an incredibly talented individual with tremendous football knowledge, and Swansea City needs football people making key football decisions.
“Paul’s arrival immediately strengthens the club, and I look forward to working with him and providing him with the resources to make a positive impact at Swansea City.”
