Lunden Roberts, the mother of Hunter Biden's child, Navy Joan Roberts, has expressed her support for President Biden's decision to grant a sweeping pardon to his son. In a statement provided by her publisher, Skyhorse, Roberts emphasized that Biden's actions were driven by parental love and that not everyone may understand his decision.
Roberts hopes that Biden will extend his love towards Navy Joan and take steps to become a grandparent to her daughter. She believes that Hunter has faced undue scrutiny due to his father's position and that he has been held to a different standard because of it.
Despite initially stating he would not pardon Hunter, President Biden ultimately reversed course and granted clemency to his son for all offenses committed between Jan. 1, 2014, and Dec. 1, 2024. This pardon covers a range of charges, including federal gun and tax offenses.
Roberts, who authored a book titled 'Out of the Shadows: My Life Inside the Wild World of Hunter Biden,' recounts her experiences with Hunter during his struggles with addiction and their journey to parenthood. She gave birth to Navy in 2018, and Hunter, who was dealing with personal challenges, had initially distanced himself.
Following a court-ordered paternity test in 2020, Hunter was confirmed as Navy's father. Roberts agreed to reduced child support payments earlier this year in exchange for Hunter making efforts to establish a relationship with their daughter.
Roberts highlighted that Hunter has engaged with Navy over Zoom calls, indicating a willingness to connect with his daughter. The family dynamics have been complex, with Hunter also being involved with his late brother's widow before marrying his current wife and welcoming a son in 2020.
President Biden's acknowledgment of Navy as his grandchild came in July 2023, after a period of uncertainty. The White House Christmas stocking display, traditionally featuring six grandchildren, did not initially include Navy.
Roberts' statements reflect a mother's unwavering support for her child and a desire for familial bonds to be strengthened despite the challenges they have faced.
