LuLu Wang's 'Expats' series delves into the rawness of women's lives in Hong Kong

LuLu Wang's limited series 'Expats' explores the lives of three American women in Hong Kong.

In the captivating Prime Video limited series 'Expats,' creator LuLu Wang takes viewers on a journey through the lives of three American women living in Hong Kong. Adapted from Janice Y.K. Lee's novel 'The Expatriates,' this series delves deep into the complexities of grief and pain, shedding light on the circumstances that test compassion and forgiveness.

Unlike Wang's previous acclaimed film 'The Farewell,' which balanced humor and melancholy, 'Expats' focuses solemnly and poignantly on the struggles of its characters. Through a slow-burning narrative spanning a year, we become intimately acquainted with Margaret, Hilary, and Mercy - three women whose lives are irreversibly altered.

Margaret, portrayed with stunning brilliance by Nicole Kidman, undergoes a profound transformation after relocating to Hong Kong's affluent Mid-Levels area with her husband and children. She struggles to connect with her new identity and the loss of her career as a landscape architect. As her family experiences a tragic accident, Margaret abandons any pretense of perfection and instead clings to her heartache, finding solace in outbursts, secluded baths, and fantasies of an escape.

Hilary, Margaret's friend and neighbor, fights desperately to maintain the illusion of a harmonious marriage with her husband David. Their child-free, polished existence seems picture-perfect, aided by their live-in helper, Puri. But beneath the surface, Hilary's determined facade starts to crumble when she gets entangled in Margaret's turmoil. The carefully constructed life she and David have built begins to unravel before her eyes.

Meanwhile, in Hong Kong's Central district, Mercy, a 24-year-old Korean American, embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Having relocated to China to distance herself from her overbearing mother, Mercy navigates her new life with an entitled attitude. However, a consequential choice propels her into the orbits of Margaret and Hilary, forcing her to confront the consequences of her actions head-on.

'Expats,' with its all-female writers' room, offers a compelling exploration of the burdens women often carry. Margaret, Hilary, and Mercy all surrender to the weight of their circumstances, discarding the illusions they once clung to. Kidman's portrayal of Margaret's shattered state is particularly gripping, as she refuses to deny her pain, defying societal expectations and allowing her vulnerability to manifest.

Amidst the personal struggles of its characters, 'Expats' also delves into themes of class and privilege. Wang expertly highlights different aspects of Hong Kong, from luxurious hotels to vibrant night markets, all against the backdrop of the pro-democracy uprisings that roiled the city in 2014. Within this complex societal landscape, the series explores the lives of Puri, Essie, and Mercy, further blurring the lines between social status and personal identity.

'Expats' offers a deeply nuanced and dark narrative, shedding light on the hidden truths women often conceal. It delves into the consequences of repression and the liberating power of choosing oneself. As Mercy, Hilary, and Margaret each confront their own demons, they discover profound lessons about acceptance, new beginnings, and the resilience required to save oneself.

Through its thought-provoking storytelling, 'Expats' encourages audiences to examine their own lives and the complexities that lie beneath the surface. This exploration of the human experience, tinged with raw emotion and profound insight, makes 'Expats' a series that will leave a lasting impact.

The first two episodes of 'Expats' premiere on January 26th on Prime Video, with subsequent episodes releasing weekly on Fridays. Don't miss the opportunity to be captivated by this enthralling series that delves deep into the human condition.
