Luke Shaw signs new Manchester United contract

Luke Shaw has signed a new four-year contract with Manchester United.

Shaw, 27, joined United from Southampton for a fee rising to £31million in 2014 and he has appeared 249 times for the club.

The absence of a plus-one option indicates United have shifted from the strategy that was introduced by the former executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. Sources say it is not a definitive policy shift as deals are negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

Shaw said: “Nine years ago, I signed for this amazing club, and I’m thrilled to be extending my stay. I’ve grown immensely since coming to Manchester all those years ago, both as a person and as a player; I know what is needed to succeed at a club like this.

“We’re at the beginning of our journey under the manager and his coaching staff. We’ve been successful already this season, but we want much more.

"There’s a great opportunity to create something special here, and I’m going to give everything to be part of that.”

The United football director John Murtough added: “Luke is a massively important player to the squad and has grown into one of the best defenders in the world.

"He has been at the club for nearly a decade and understands the expectations for success, and the hard work, commitment and high standards required to achieve it.

“He has added leadership to his other outstanding abilities, and we all look forward to seeing him in a Manchester United shirt for years to come.”

Having missed the 2016 FA Cup final and 2017 Europa League final through injury and been omitted from the 2017 League Cup final and 2018 FA Cup final matchday squads, Shaw started in the 2021 Europa League final defeat to Villarreal.

The England international finally started in a winning United final in the League Cup defeat of Newcastle in February.

United triggered the one-year extension in Shaw's contract earlier this season and the club are also in discussions over renewals for Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and David de Gea.
