Luke Shaw sets ambitious Man Utd target amid rivals Man City's Treble bid

Luke Shaw believes Manchester United need to be challenging for the Premier League and Champions League next season with rivals Manchester City on the verge of completely the Treble.

The Red Devils have improved under Erik ten Hag this term and are on course to qualify for Europe's elite club competition. United require a point from their remaining two matches against Chelsea and Fulham to secure their place ahead of fifth-place Liverpool, who face Southampton on the final day.

Barring a mini-disaster, United will be back in the Champions League after a one-year hiatus. Ten Hag guided the Red Devils to the quarter-final of the Europa League, before losing out to Sevilla. However, United are in the final of the FA Cup against Man City and have the opportunity to come away with two trophies this season.

But Shaw has admitted United need to be aiming higher. "I think teams around us can definitely see that United are coming back," he told Sky Sports. "First season under the new manager there is always going to be a bit of transition. It's clear to see what he has brought in and how he has changed the way we think, the way we play.

"I think he wants to bring a lot of intensity. I think everything he wants the team to do is high intensity, he wants us to be aggressive, on the front foot, pressing as high as possible. With the ball he has made us better, we are definitely a threat on the ball.

"It's clear to see we're going in the right direction. I think like I touched on before, we have to be challenging for the title with this team. With the directions this manager is going under, I'm sure we are going to make new, big signings this summer.

"Hope we can get them in as soon as possible so they are in for pre-season. Our aim at the beginning of next season has to be winning the Premier League and the Champions League. That's how we've got to think from now on."

United face Chelsea and Fulham in back-to-back home matches before the season ends on Sunday. And Shaw has called for the Old Trafford support to be as loud as ever as they try and get over the line.

''It’s tough to say what it is, but the atmosphere the fans create definitely helps," Shaw told United's website. They’ve been amazing this season, home and away. But I think when we’re at Old Trafford we feel unbeatable, we feel good and when we’re there, the mentality is right and that needs to stay that way.

''We also need to have the results we’ve been having at home in away games. That’s where we’ve been poor this season, in away games at times, especially in the big matches when we’ve not been ourselves. 'That’s something we know we need to improve on. But the home performances and results have been very good.''
