Luke Shaw reveals 'chats' with Erik ten Hag after losing Manchester United starting spot

Luke Shaw says he has “accepted” why he has been dropped by Erik ten Hag and has vowed to be ready when called upon.

The left-back started his first game since last month’s 4-0 loss to Brighton in England’s 3-3 Nations League draw with Germany on Monday night. He netted the first of the home side’s goals, his first goal since the Euro 2020 final.

After being hooked off at half-time for Tyrell Malacia in the Brentford defeat, Shaw has enjoyed just 20 minutes of action for United, coming on in the 2-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League.

The 27-year-old’s game time chances took a blow when he suffered a foot injury at the start of the month but he played the full 90 minutes for the Three Lions on Monday in addition to the 18 he enjoyed in Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Italy.

Speaking after last night’s draw, Shaw said he understood why he had been dropped following the early season losses to Brighton and Brentford. He revealed he had held “chats” with Ten Hag over his situation, and said that his manager understands his game.

“I think Ten Hag, the boss, he knows my qualities, he knows what I’m capable of and we’ve had chats,” he told talkSPORT.

“It’s understandable that, and I even agree, the start of the season wasn’t good enough and he had to make changes and I fully accept that, I accepted it.

“The only thing I can do is train hard and wait for my opportunities, whether that’s in the cup games or the Premier League, whatever I play in I just have to be ready and play at the standard I should be at.”
