Luke Shaw issues Man Utd apology and tells Roy Keane what he wanted to hear

Luke Shaw has admitted Manchester United's performance against Liverpool on Sunday was a "disgrace" and "unacceptable".

Erik ten Hag's side were humiliated 7-0 by Liverpool at Anfield thanks to braces from Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. Roberto Firmino also found the net to help the hosts complete their biggest ever win against their embarrassed bitter rivals.

Ex-United skipper Roy Keane was furious with his old employers at full-time and urged them to "bounce back" immediately or "go missing for a few months" in shame. Shaw has insisted United will do the former, with a devastating "debrief" pencilled in for Monday.

Shaw spoke to United's in-house media after Sunday's game to apologise. The England international said, "Out there on the pitch, I felt embarrassed for us players, for the fans who were supporting us and who were watching at home.

"To watch that second half... I can only apologise for that, us, as players, have to own it, we have to stand up and accept that it was nowhere near good enough."

Shaw went on to describe United's display as "completely unacceptable" and believes the team's "standards have clearly dropped" since their victory against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final eight days ago. That was United's first trophy in six years.

Shaw has urged his team-mates to get back their "normal selves". He added, "We need to find the good things we were doing before and bring them back, because this hurts a lot and it’s really unacceptable what we did in that second half."

United conceded six goals in the second half during a dramatic collapse at Anfield. It is United's joint-biggest defeat in their 145-year history, with their last 7-0 loss coming in 1931. Shaw claimed, "We showed no personality and no mentality."

Shaw insisted United would have a "big debrief" on Monday to assess "what went wrong". He added, "We need to keep the belief, keep the character and bring back the personality and mentality... we can't let one result derail our whole season."

Keane was disappointed with United's display. He told Sky Sports, "That's where they [Liverpool] deserve credit, they created opportunities, they were clinical, ruthless. They kept going, wanted more goals, but the senior players - I always look at them. The ones we give a big build-up to, the experienced ones, will be the ones who let the club down today."

Keane went on to say, "You'd go into hiding if you were a player. Never mind a few days, I think I'd go missing for a few months, it really is that embarrassing for the players. What can you do, that's the game, they've got to bounce back."

United will be determined to get back to winning way when they host Real Betis in the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday. Ten Hag's side are back in Premier League action on Sunday, as relegation candidates Southampton travel to Old Trafford.
