Lukaku bench, James return - 3 questions Thomas Tuchel must answer ahead of Chelsea vs Tottenham

Chelsea enter into their 16th match since the beginning of December this weekend and take on Spurs for the third time in January.

The Blues coasted past Antonio Conte's side over two legs in the Carabao Cup semi-final, but weren't pressured into performing their best.

Since then, Chelsea's Premier League struggles have continued as Thomas Tuchel's side have picked up a loss and a draw against Manchester City and Brighton, respectively.

Tottenham looked more lively against Leicester as an impressive performance saw them score two late goals to overcome Leicester 3-2 on Wednesday evening.

Momentum is a delicate thing and Chelsea need to ensure it can swing in their favour.

football.london takes a look at what Thomas Tuchel could be asked about on Friday afternoon:

Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah latest

It feels like Chelsea are due some positive injury news and Trevoh Chalobah is set to return to training on Friday after suffering a hamstring injury in the draw with Liverpool at the beginning of January.

The 22-year-old entered the game nursing the issue but opted to play given the Blues were light on numbers. It remains to be seen how close the academy product is to pushing for a place in the side but Tuchel should be able to provide an update.

Reece James will not be available to take on the Lilywhites of course but football.london understands James has already taken on some light jogging at Cobham.

The wing-back tore his hamstring against Brighton in December and left Stamford Bridge on crutches. The England international is expected to miss 6-8 weeks of action in total but appears in good spirits.

James posted an Instagram picture of him in his boots with the comment: "Laced up" 1 step closer.

A more definite timeframe could begin to emerge as James goes further in his rehabilitation.

Romelu Lukaku's place in the team

While Chelsea's struggle to generate clear-cut chances is obviously a wider issue, given the price the Blues paid for Romelu Lukaku and the interview that emerged in December, his place in the side is always going to be a talking point.

Tuchel refused to discuss the Belgian's performance against Brighton, where Lukaku ended up in conversation with Hakim Ziyech as they tried to navigate the best way of finding a connection.

Tuchel said: "I will not talk about single players. Today isn't about Romelu. There are too many questions about Romelu and too many answers about Romelu. Romelu is by far not the problem, he is part of the solution."

However, the fact Lukaku has recorded just 30 touches in his last two matches combined cannot be ignored. For the 28-year-old to score goals, he needs the ball in good positions more often.

With little time to prepare for Spurs there is limited scope to develop more patterns but either the team will need to adjust, or a player who can become more involved immediately might be selected for such a big game.

Transfer update

Just 10 days remain of the transfer window and the Blues do not appear much closer to solving their issues than when the month began.

The German coach has hinted in the past that Chelsea were exploring options in the wing-back positions given the injuries to Ben Chilwell and James.

Kenedy has returned to the club and he is an option on the left flank, but he is widely expected to head out on another loan deal. Meanwhile, Chelsea have been rebuffed in their attempts to prise Emerson Palmieri back from his loan to Lyon.

So the questions remains, is any transfer on the cards?
