Luka Modric is in talks with Real Madrid over a contract extension and wants to stay at the Spanish giants, ending talk of a transfer to Manchester City.
2018 Ballon d'Or winner Modric, 36, is out of contract at Madrid at the end of the season, leading to some reports in Spain that City would make a shock move for the Croatian this month.
City already have a number of talented midfielders, with other players who can drop in to central midfield if needed, while for all of Modric's undoubted talent, he doesn't fit the criteria of a typical Pep Guardiola signing due to his age and lower chances of him joining City's intense pressing.
Now, after scoring in Real's Spanish Super Cup win over Athletic Bilbao in Saudi Arabia on Sunday to earn his 18th trophy at Los Blancos, Modric has confirmed his intention to remain at the Bernabeu, with talks underway.
"As I've reached a certain age, and people talk a lot about ages in football, but I'm enjoying it more than ever," Modric told reporters.
"I've always enjoyed it, I love what I do, but now I enjoy it even more because you never know how long you'll last at this level.
"I'm doing everything to keep going for a few more years. I make an effort, and there's nothing better for me than being a Real Madrid player, enjoying every day and winning trophies. It's 18 now in nine-and-a-half years and I hope more will come.
“I had a good relationship with the club and I continue like this, I’m sure we’ll reach an agreement and do what we think is best for both of us.
"It didn’t take us two minutes to reach an agreement. I’m not thinking about that right now. My wish is known, I hope the club too”.
