Luka Doncic avoids suspension as NBA rescinds 16th technical foul

The NBA has overturned Luka Doncic’s technical-foul suspension.

The league announced Saturday evening that it had rescinded the technical foul the Mavericks’ superstar received for complaining to officials at the end of the first quarter Friday about what he thought was a missed shooting foul.

Just as Doncic expected.

The Mavericks appealed the technical foul — Doncic’s 16th of the regular season — and Doncic said after the game “100% it should be rescinded. He said he asked head official Tony Brothers “why is that not a foul?” after drawing contact around half-court from Portland Trail Blazers defender Elijah Hughes and falling to the court on a deep 3-point look at the quarter buzzer.

Rather than serving an automatic one-game suspension Sunday night for Tech No. 16, Doncic will be available to play in the Mavericks’ regular-season finale against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Mavericks are aiming to jump to the No. 3 seed, depending on the Warriors’ results, and Doncic’s production and presence will be key.

Perhaps the best news of all?

Doncic’s technical-foul count will reset in the playoffs, where players face an automatic one-game suspension after their seventh.
