Luis Suarez in 'constant pain' amid fears former Liverpool star could retire

Former Liverpool star Luis Suarez could be set to retire after it was revealed that he is in "constant pain" due to a knee injury.

Suarez is currently playing for Gremio after leaving his boyhood club, Nacional, last December. He has so far made 25 appearances for the Brazilian side.

However, claims in Brazil have suggested Suarez is considering announcing his official retirement due to a long-standing knee issue. The forward still has a year to run on the contract he signed back in December, but a report from GZH Esportes claimed that "a meeting between the athlete and the club's management will seal the situation in the coming days."

And now Gremio president Alberto Guerra has revealed the striker is in "constant pain" and the issue affecting the Uruguayan is also described as "serious".

"Luis Suarez is reaching his limit," Guerra said in a video on Twitter. "To be able to play, he is given almost daily injections and special treatments; he feels constant pain. The thing is serious."

Suarez left Anfield for Barcelona in 2014 after notching 82 goals in 133 appearances in all competitions for the club. During his six years at the Camp Nou, the now 36-year-old scored 147 in 191 appearances.

The former Ajax star won four La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys and the 2015 Champions League when Barca beat Juventus 3-1 to seal a treble in his first season alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar.

The forward then called an end to his time in Europe after leaving Atletico Madrid in 2022. He'd spent two years in Madrid and was part of the side that won LaLiga in 2020-21.
