Luis Lopes joins Aberdeen as Benfica striker pens three year deal to become Jim Goodwin's seventh summer signing

Aberdeen have announced their seventh signing of the summer as striker Luis Lopes joins from Benfica.

The forward has penned a three-year deal for a reported fee of £400,000 as he makes his way to the Granite City ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. Dons boss Jim Goodwin has been keen to bolster his attacking options this summer with Christian Ramirez and new recruit Bojan Miovski his only out-and-out senior strikers. But it's now job done with the arrival of Lopes who will slot into the Pittodrie side's front line.

The 22-year-old has been playing for the Portuguese outfit's B team throughout the last two years, scoring 11 goals in 42 outings. However, the striker has never appeared for their first team and will be instead looking for a regular spot in Jim Goodwin's starting XI next season. Lopes has represented Portugal at Under-18 and U19 level, but made his full international debut for Cape Verde last month.

The Aberdeen side were in need of a revamp after a disappointing season last time out, and that seems to be exactly what is happening with seven signings and counting. The financial boost provided by Calvin Ramsay is sure to help with his £6.5million move to Liverpool concluding last month. And earlier this week the Dons have secured a second boost with Lewis Ferguson making a signing for Serie A side Bologna in a £3million deal.

Boss Goodwin said: “Luis is another good addition for us at the top end of the pitch and it creates more competition for places, which is something I was keen to build within the squad this year.

“He is quick, strong, and powerful and he fits our recruitment strategy perfectly. He is a young player who still has a lot to learn, and he is not quite the finished article yet, but we firmly believe we will give him the platform to perform and continue his development.

“He’s had a really good football education at Benfica, and I am sure he will come to Aberdeen, score goals, and make a positive impact.”
