Luis Enrique response speaks volumes after Chelsea appointed Frank Lampard instead of him

Chelsea managerial candidate Luis Enrique has been left ‘disappointed’ by Todd Boehly ’s decision to appoint Frank Lampard on an interim basis.

The Spaniard is one of the front-runners to claim the vacancy on a full-time basis following the sacking of Graham Potter. The Blues have given themselves time to find the right man by appointing club icon Frank Lampard until the end of the campaign.

That decision has proven to be disastrous so far with Chelsea now on a run of three consecutive defeats since their former midfielder’s return - Saturday afternoon's 2-1 reverse to Brighton the latest slump in what has been a wretched season at Stamford Bridge. That decision also certainly appears to have wrangled with Spanish coach Enrique.

According to AS, the former Barcelona man has been left ‘disappointed’ with Chelsea’s temporary switch. It is suggested that Enrique wanted the chance to take over straight away, indicating just how serious he was about taking the job.

He apparently wanted to oversee the Blues’ Champions League quarter-final with Real Madrid, as well as the remainder of the Premier League season. Regardless, he could still be on the touchline at Stamford Bridge next term with talks having been held between Boehly and Enrique over recent weeks.

One man who is keen on the Spaniard arriving at Stamford Bridge is former Chelsea man William Gallas - the Frenchman suggesting that Enrique could emulate countryman Pep Guardiola should he be appointed. As quoted by Genting Casino, he said: "Enrique would bring a Spanish style to Chelsea.

“He’s won trophies, so he has a lot of experience he can bring. He can bring something new too. He also has to know what players he needs to try and win the league, so I think it will be a good fit.

"It’s very difficult now to find the right manager for clubs now, as they don’t have time to show what they can do. Pep Guardiola showed how to win trophies with City. So it will be interesting to see if Enrique can do the same thing. It will be a great challenge for him."

Enrique has been out of work since his spell with the Spanish national team came to an end after the World Cup. Before that, he had enjoyed a standout stint with Barcelona after winning two LaLiga titles, three Copas del Rey, the Champions League and a whole host of other trophies.

Whilst he appears to be one of the frontrunners for the Chelsea job, there are other options being considered. Former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann continues to be linked with a move to West London.

Elsewhere, Sporting Portugal Head Coach Ruben Amorim is another option being considered. Reports have suggested that he too has held talks with the Blues regarding the prospect of taking over.
