Luis Diaz scout report as Liverpool's new £50m signing makes debut vs Cardiff City

Luis Diaz's Liverpool journey has got underway after being thrown into FA Cup action just days after landing from Porto.

The £50million winger was named on the bench for the fourth round clash vs Cardiff City on Sunday despite Jurgen Klopp's uncertainty in the build-up whether he would be involved.

Diaz was only in Argentina playing for Colombia on Tuesday and didn't take part in his first Liverpool training session until Friday.

But Klopp admitted a debut in front of a packed-out Anfield was an "exciting" prospect, and threw Diaz on just 58 minutes in to a rapturous cheer and applause in front of the Kop.

Liverpool were already a goal to the good when Diaz entered the fray, courtesy of Diogo Jota's headed goal only moments earlier.

Up until that point it had been a tricky afternoon for Klopp's men, as their Championship opponents put up a resilient defence to keep them at bay.

Diaz formed part of a four-pronged Liverpool attack once on, constantly rotating with Jota, Roberto Firmino and Takumi Minamino to try and create gaps in the Cardiff defence.

It didn't take him long to make an impact.

Diaz chased down a Cardiff defender deep in his own box, before dispossessing him on the byline and somehow squirming past him and another blue shirt while keeping the ball in play.

From. there he slid the ball back into the danger area right in front of goal, where Jota couldn't make contact but the onrushing Minamino was flying in to fire home and double Liverpool's advantage.

Ten minutes in and Diaz had his first Liverpool assist. No doubt there will be plenty more to come.

One of the reasons Liverpool signed Diaz was for his electric pace, and the Anfield crowd were on the edge of their seats each time their new signing was within a five-metre radius of the ball as his teammates frequently looked to release him into open space.

His next major involvement saw him burst inside from the left, bearing down on goal as Cardiff defenders retreated, before feeding a ball out wide to Elliott.

In truth it was perhaps slightly wider than his teammate would have hoped, though Liverpool still managed to manufacture a chance from it.

But the sheer Anfield roar behind Diaz's driving run though spoke volumes about the excitement and enthusiasm this new arrival has garnered on Merseyside. There is a good feeling about the winger already.

A goal from Elliott soon after put the game beyond doubt, even despite Rubin Colwill's consolation 10 minutes from time.

One positive for Klopp will have been to see Diaz having no qualms about dropping deep to show for his teammates as they looked to take the sting out of any ideas Cardiff had of mounting a comeback.

There was then concern for Diaz after he was lay stricken on the turf grimacing with agony having taken a hefty tumble after challenging for a header.

Even Klopp looked on with a worried expression across his face, though any fears were soon allayed as Diaz got to his feet and walked off the field.

Liverpool then looked to see out the match without any further injury risks, with Diaz linking play nicely when involved.

All in all it was a slightly subdued display for the winger, who failed to get into full flight, though through no real fault of his own against Cardiff's rigid, compact defence.

Yet Liverpool will be plenty buoyed by an assist on his debut, and with Klopp still unsure whether to throw Salah and Mane straight back into the fray on Thursday, Diaz could even be in line for a start against Leicester.

Either way, he's off to a great start.
