Luis Diaz's hilarious reaction after meeting Virgil van Dijk for first time

Luis Diaz became the latest star to join Liverpool's ranks at the end of the transfer window, and the Colombian international was taken aback after meeting new teammate Virgil van Dijk for the first time.

Diaz joined from Porto in a deal worth an initial £37.5m, taking the number 23 shirt at Anfield and being named in a matchday squad for the first time as the Reds took on Cardiff in the FA Cup.

The 25-year-old has come up against his new teammates before, impressing Jurgen Klopp when he was part of a Porto side which put Liverpool to the test in the Champions League group stages.

A face-to-face meeting with Virgil van Dijk away from the pitch was a different story, though, and Diaz's reaction after being greeted by the Dutchman was priceless.

Diaz was welcomed by Van Dijk upon arriving for duty at his new club, with the centre-back greeting him with a hug and saying "nice to meet you".

The new signing was dwarfed by his colleague, and the size difference was not lost on the former Porto man.

"He's so big," Diaz said while walking away from Van Dijk, prompting laughter from all those around him.

The new man started both of Porto's European games against Liverpool, playing 90 minutes each time as Sergio Conceicao's team lost home and away.

Van Dijk was also involved in the game at the Dragao, but meeting the Dutchman in person outside a matchday environment put into context just how large a man he is.

The Netherlands international has been a key figure for Liverpool since returning from the injury which kept him sidelined for most of the 2020-21 season, helping Jurgen Klopp's side win their Champions League group with a perfect record and set up a last-16 clash with Inter Milan.

Porto, meanwhile, will face Lazio in the Europa League after finishing third in their group behind Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.

"I’ve not been here for very long but in the short time I’ve had with my new teammates, I’ve shared a few words with some great players and real references at this club,." Diaz told club media in his first official interview.

"I’m very proud to be meeting up with them, and to now have the chance to play alongside them as a teammate and share a dressing room with them is a great source of pride for me.

"My mindset is that I’m ready to help out my team and do my bit and contribute, as you said. I’m available to the manager and his coaching staff for whatever they need me for, and I’ll be ready to go whenever."
