Luis Diaz medical update as Liverpool look to seal £49m transfer deal

Luis Diaz's medical is underway as Liverpool edge closer to sealing a £49m deal.

The ECHO understands the process is progressing well and the Reds should get their man ahead of Monday's transfer deadline.

Liverpool sent a club delegation to Argentina to meet up with Diaz while he is on international duty.

Medical tests are taking place as Diaz prepares for Colombia's next assignment.

Argentina host his side at 11.30pm UK time on Tuesday.

If all goes to plan, it is possible Diaz will be able to travel to Liverpool towards the end of next week.

The 25-year-old Porto winger had been identified by Jurgen Klopp as a first-choice option for summer 2022.

But a couple of factors accelerated Liverpool's interest and brought it forward to January.

Diaz is believed to have had a £67m release clause in his contract, but Porto have been forced to take a financial hit after finishing third in their Champions League group behind Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.

As a result, the Reds' bid of £37m with a further £12m in add-ons is on the cusp of being a successful one.

Anfield sources believe an early move for Diaz presents better value for the club with Porto initially eyeing a fee in excess of £49m in the summer months, which was the winger's original asking price.

Spurs had also made advances towards Diaz this week - with Liverpool acting swiftly to cut that off and bring him to Anfield.

Klopp's men are still fighting on all four fronts this term.

And the arrival of Diaz looks set to be a significant boost with the prospect of silverware on the horizon.
