Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, released his first public statement on Valentine's Day, expressing gratitude for the support he has received while in federal custody.

The statement, posted on the homepage of a new website launched by his legal defense team, claims to combat misinformation and provide updates on his high-profile case.

"I am overwhelmed by—and grateful for—everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support," Mangione, 26, said. "Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded MDC from across the country, and around the globe."

His message comes just days after he accepted nearly $300,000 in donations from over 10,000 supporters.

Mangione, who went to an Ivy League school and was previously a data engineer for TrueCar, allegedly shot Thompson dead outside a Midtown hotel on Dec. 4. Following a dramatic five-day manhunt, he was arrested in Pennsylvania and now faces state and federal charges, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism.

Widespread criticism of the healthcare industry and fervent support of the accused shocked authorities in the wake of the crime.

If convicted in his federal case, Mangione could face the death penalty.

His defense attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, has not commented on the website, which was verified by Rolling Stone.
