Luigi Mangione Could Face The Death Penalty If Convicted Of Murder Using A Firearm In NYC

Accused CEO killer Luigi Mangione could potentially face the death penalty for allegedly shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

The 26-year-old was extradited to New York after a court hearing in Pennsylvania on Friday (local time) where he waived his right to extradition proceedings. Federal prosecutors are charging Mangione with four further charges: one charge of murder using a firearm, two charges of stalking and one charge of using an illegal gun silencer.

The murder by a firearm has the potential of being punishable by death, if he is convicted. He could also face life in prison without parole.

Attorney Pete Weeks told reporters that Pennsylvanian authorities are willing to put other charges on hold to allow for the New York proceedings.

“He is now in their custody,” he said, per the ABC.

“He will go forth with New York to await trial or prosecution for his homicide and related charges in New York,” Mr Weeks said.

Mangione is expected to face the New York court later today, local time.

Luigi Mangione was arrested on December 9 for the alleged killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4. He was apprehended from a Mcdonald’s in Pennsylvania, where he was reportedly found with a gun, a silencer, four fake IDs and other items authorities claimed were “consistent” with what investigators were in search for.

At the scene of the crime, authorities found ammunition casings with the words “deny”, “defend” and “depose”, which is similar to the phrase “delay, deny, defend” used by lawyers to refer to the tactics used by insurance companies to allegedly avoid paying out claims to their customers.

As a result, his arrest sparked an outpouring of debate and discussion about the healthcare system in the United States.
