Luigi Mangione — the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson — has been charged with murder as an act of terrorism.
Although Mangione was already facing murder charges, the new terrorism charges come after the 26-year-old was indicted by New York Prosecutors on Wednesday morning (local time).
According to New York Law, murder as an act of terrorism charges can be implemented when an alleged crime is “intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policies of a unit of government by intimidation or coercion and affect the conduct of a unit of government by murder, assassination or kidnapping”.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Brag told reporters that the new charges come due to the premeditated nature of the shooting.
“This was a frightening, well-planned, targeted murder that was intended to cause shock and attention and intimidation,” he said.
“It occurred in one of the most bustling parts of our city, threatened the safety of local residents and tourists alike, commuters and businesspeople just starting out on their day.
“This was a killing that it was intended to evoke terror, and we’ve seen that reaction.”
Mangione has been charged with 11 offences in New York, including the murder as a domestic terrorism charge. He is due to attend two court hearings in Pennsylvania on Thursday (local time). One is for the murder charges while the other is an extradition hearing to see whether he will be moved from custody at a Pennsylvania state prison to New York.
Luigi Mangione’s lawyer has yet to comment publicly on the case.
