After a whirlwind day of headlines and thirsty tweets since he was identified and arrested, Luigi Mangione has been charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Prosecutors in New York have filed for murder and other charges against the 26-year-old, who is alleged to have killed Thompson last week in the streets of New York outside the Hilton Hotel.
According to reports from CNN, Mangione has been charged with one count of second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a firearm.
These charges come after an intense five-day manhunt for Thompson’s suspected killer, which caught the internet by storm.
Investigations took days, with small details being revealed to the public including a photo of Mangione from CCTV, and his backpack being found in New York Central Park filled with Monopoly money.
He was eventually arrested on firearms charges after being identified at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, where police declared he was a “person of interest” in the shooting of Thompson.

Authorities say that Mangione was in possession of a 3D-printed gun and silencer, along with fake IDs when he was arrested.
As well as these items, police also found a handwritten document that outlined Mangione’s “motivation and his mindset”, and expressed “ill will towards corporate America”.
Brian Thompson, 50, died of gunshot wounds on his way to a business conference. The attack is believed to have been premeditated.
Bullet casings found at the scene of the crime were inscribed with the words “Deny”, “Defend”, and “Depose”.
This echoes a criticism of the American health insurance industry — from the book Delay, Deny, Defend — as the way these companies drive up profit by denying their customers healthcare.
Following his initial arrest, the family of Luigi Mangione released a statement saying they are “shocked and devastated” by the events.
“We offer prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved,” read the statement.
