Lufthansa strike: Glasgow travellers issued warning as ground staff to stage walk out

Ground staff at Deutsche Lufthansa are set to take part in a one-day strike on Wednesday (July 27).

It comes as staff are after a 9.5 per cent pay rise or at least 350more per month for 12 months for around 20,000 workers due to soaring inflation as well as staffing shortages.

According to Reuters, strikes and staff shortages have already forced airlines including Lufthansa to cancel thousands of flights and caused hours-long queues at major airports.

As of now, Glasgow Airport has two Lufthansa scheduled flights today set to land in Frankfurt - both of which will go ahead as planned to the relief of many holidaymakers. However the German union, Verdi, have said that the walkout by Lufthansa's ground units will lead to additional cancellations and delays as it includes workers with key jobs such as aircraft maintenance as well as moving the aircraft away from boarding gates to prepare for take-off.

Glasgow Airport travellers should check their flights before they leave their home.

The strike will affect German airports including Frankfurt, Duesseldorf and Berlin, and will run from 3:45am (1:45am GMT) on Wednesday until 6am (4am GMT) on Thursday. Lufthansa is said to have offered an increase of 150€ per month for the rest of this year and another 100€ more from the start of 2023. And depending on the company's financial result, people will also be offered a two per cent rise from the middle of next year.

As reported by Reuters, Verdi rejected the offer however stating it was insufficient to offset soaring inflation which hit 8.2 per cent in Germany during last month. And according to Verdi deputy chief Christine Behle, workers are said to be "urgently need more money and they need relief - for themselves and for the passengers."

Verdi and Lufthansa have held two rounds of wage negotiations so far. A third is scheduled for Aug. 3 and 4.

In a statement, Lufthansa said: "If your international flight to Germany is operating but your international onward flight from Frankfurt or Munich is cancelled, Lufthansa recommends a rebooking for another day. Should you still take your flight to Frankfurt or Munich without a confirmed alternative for the onward flight, there is a risk that you will not be able to continue your journey there for several hours or days.

"In such a case, please also consider visa regulations for entry into Germany. If you are able to arrange your own onward travel (e.g. rental car, bus, train), please keep all receipts for subsequent reimbursement of costs. The same applies to any hotel accommodation."
