Lucy Owen praises staff at hospital for saving father-in-law's life

Lucy Owen has praised the "exceptional care" of staff at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend - and have thanked them for saving her father-in-law's life. Lucy, most known as one of the presenters of BBC's Wales Today and the recently-axed popular consumer rights show X-Ray, says her partner's father, Degwel Owen, has now "bounced back" from his illness and is doing well.

Thanking NHS staff for caring for Degwel so well, Lucy, 51, tweeted: "So grateful for the exceptional care over the past few weeks for Rhodri's dad. Staff at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Cwm Taf Morgannwg, saved his life on Monday night.

"Amazingly, Degwel Owen has bounced back and is doing well! Diolch yn fawr iawn."

Lucy married her husband Rhodri, a radio and television presenter, in 2004 and the pair have hosted and appeared on dozens of radio and television news programmes between them. Rhodri is perhaps most well-known as the former main station voice of BBC Radio Wales and is currently a presenter for S4C.

He hasn't fully commented on his father's illness yet but he reacted to his wife Lucy's Tweet with several 'praise hands' emojis and a red heart.

Several fans and colleagues have replied to Lucy and Owen's post, sending their well wishes to Degwel. TV presenter and weather reporter Siân Lloyd said: " Oh my goodness. So alarming to hear this but so pleased he seems to be on the mend. As you so poignantly said, diolch hiwj i’r #NHS Gwellhad buan iddo a chariad mawr i chi gyd."

Fan Julia Watts said: "That sounded a really scary time. Thank you #nhs for getting RhoddersOwen's dad on the mend again and much love to him, Rhod, Lucy and the family. Thinking of you all. X". While fan Stuart Edwards said: "Great news. The staff there have always been lovely whenever I've been to visit."

The Owens' family friend Chris Lewis added: "Oh Rhodri, I am so relieved that your father is ok, please give my best regards to your Mum. Take care, Chris."

Lucy Owen previously spoke to WalesOnline about the axing of BBC Wales consumer show X-Ray, which came to an unexpected end last month after a solid 22-year run. Upon first finding out that the show had been cancelled, she said: “I have to say that it was a little bit of a shock for all of the team. We weren’t expecting it and we are all really sad because we’re a tight little team and we take a lot of pride in what we do."

Over the years, Lucy Owen has become one of the main faces of news in Wales. Despite this, the journalist, who hails from Llandaff in Cardiff, has revealed that she currently has no plans to pursue a prime-time network job.

“That isn’t really an ambition of mine," Lucy told WalesOnline. "I’m not saying I’d turn an opportunity like that down but I’m really enjoying focusing on news at the moment.

“There are lots of opportunities within the newsroom to develop stories into longer formats for iPlayer. It’s an exciting time to be working in news at the moment and I enjoy being back in Wales and I like being here for my son. With any sort of network programmes, there would be a lot of travel and a lot of time in London.” You can read more of our interview with her in a previous article here.
