Lucy Letby, the former NHS nurse convicted of murdering seven babies, has reportedly formed a friendship with a notorious prisoner, raising concerns about her psychological state and motivations. Letby, who is currently serving a life sentence at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey, has struck up a close bond with Beinash Batool, the woman convicted of torturing and murdering her 10-year-old stepdaughter, Sara Sharif.
Letby, 34, was convicted of her horrific crimes committed between 2015 and 2016 at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Her sentence includes a 15th whole-life term for attempting to murder a baby girl. Since her incarceration, Letby has reportedly developed a strong friendship with Batool, whose own heinous crimes shocked the nation. Both women are now working in key prison roles—Letby runs the laundry while Batool works in the kitchens, as reported by the Mirror.

An insider within the prison recently revealed the growing closeness between the two women, describing how they were seen playing cards and laughing together. “She’s best friends with that Beinash,” the source noted, adding that Letby’s connection with Batool isn’t helping her reputation, with many prisoners still convinced of her guilt.
Psychologist and criminologist Alex Iszatt has weighed in on the relationship, suggesting that it reflects Letby’s need for connection and validation. “While it may seem inevitable that two convicted child killers would bond, their relationship speaks volumes about Letby’s psyche and Batool’s pragmatic survival strategies,” Iszatt explained. “Letby seeks companionship from those who won’t challenge her self-perception, reinforcing her image as a victim of the system.”
Letby, who has consistently denied her guilt, is reportedly drawn to relationships that support her belief in her innocence. “This bond reinforces Letby’s self-image as a victim of the system rather than someone who has truly reckoned with the gravity of her actions,” Iszatt continued. “Her connection to Batool is telling in this regard, as their crimes are vastly different—Letby’s medical killings and Batool’s torture of her stepdaughter are almost diametrically opposed.”

This troubling friendship is not Letby’s first; she has previously formed connections with notorious criminals such as Michelle Smith, a convicted baby poisoner, and Shauna Hoare, involved in the murder of schoolgirl Becky Watts. Letby’s pattern of forming bonds with other high-profile criminals suggests her deep need for social engagement, even in an environment where relationships are often forged for survival rather than emotional support.
Iszatt also noted that, unlike other notorious criminals who may isolate themselves in prison, Letby remains socially active. “Unlike other high-profile criminals who retreat in isolation, Letby remains socially engaged, playing cards and chatting with Batool in a seemingly normal way. This suggests that Letby doesn’t feel the full weight of her crimes or, if she does, is using this social engagement as a way to distance herself from the emotional burden of her actions,” Iszatt stated.
The situation has taken a further twist with Letby’s legal team applying to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) for a review of her case, citing “significant new medical evidence.” This development, combined with her close alliance with Batool, has led some experts to speculate that Letby’s need for acceptance may play a key role in both her ongoing battle with the justice system and her troubled psychological state behind bars.
