She may still be celebrating from yesterday’s historic win - but footballer Lucy Bronze already has her sights set on her next achievement.
Almost 90,000 fans in Wembley Stadium and millions more at home celebrated as the Lionesses won 2-1 against Germany on Sunday, making them the champions of the Women’s Euros - the first time an England football team has won a major tournament since 1966. And many footie fans in the North East were cheering for Northumberland-born Lucy.
The 30-year-old star will play for Barcelona next season, having already won three Women’s Super League titles with Liverpool and Manchester City and three Women’s Champions Leagues with Lyon. But the star player is eyeing up another ground-breaking win for the England team next year - the Women’s World Cup.

“I’m so proud of the fact we finally got our hands on a trophy – but now we want to get our hands on a World Cup next year,” Lucy said after England’s Euros victory.
“Anybody that knows me knows I’m like that with anything,” she added. “The Euros is fantastic especially in our home country, but there’s a little star missing from our crest at the minute on the England shirt.”
The next Women’s World Cup is set to take place in Australia and New Zealand in summer 2023, meaning that the European champions have just one year before they take on the world. The rise to global domination is enough to inspire any North East girl who loves football, with Lucy Bronze beginning her footballing career at Alnwick Town before going on to play for Blyth Town and Sunderland.
