Lucky woman goes shopping for biscuits - ends up winning $2million on scratchcard

A lucky woman "started to shake" when she won $2million on a lottery scratchcard while out shopping for biscuits.

Amelia Estes, 51, from North Carolina, US, couldn't believe her luck when she found out she had won a mega jackpot on a routine Saturday morning.

She was out shopping for some biscuits when was left stunned after finding out she had won $2million (£1.7million) on a scratchcard.

Estes revealed her hands started to shake when she realised she had won big.

She said: "I looked and looked and my hands just started shaking."

Estes, who purchased the ticket on January 14, added: “It was surreal.”

The North Carolina Education Lottery said in a statement: "A routine Saturday morning stop for biscuits turned ‘surreal’ for Amelia Estes of Thomasville after a $20million (£16million) scratch-off purchase revealed a $2 million prize."

The lucky 100X The Cash ticket was bought at a Sam's Mini Mart as she stopped off to buy some biscuits.

The statement added: "Estes, 51, bought her lucky 100X The Cash ticket from Sam’s Mini Mart on West Green Drive in High Point. She bought the ticket after stopping at Biscuitville on Saturday 14 January.

Estes had a feeling which was telling her to buy a ticket.

She said: "Something was just telling me to go get that ticket."

As soon as Estes received confirmation she was a millionaire she quickly rushed home to tell her mum.

The statement added: "She said she gave her mom the good news as soon as she got home."

Estes came back home and surprised her mum who was left stunned at her win.

She said: "I came into the house real quiet and I told my mom, ‘I think we’re millionaires. She was already sitting down, thank goodness.”

North Carolina Education Lottery confirmed the win on Thursday: "When Estes arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday to collect her prize, she could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $100,000 (£81,015) over 20 years or a lump sum of $1.2 million (£972,000].

"She chose the lump-sum amount of $1.2 million and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $855,006 (£691,905)."

Estes said she plans to use the money to plan for retirement, she revealed: "We are going to plan for a comfortable retirement now."
