Man over the moon as he wins £300,000 just hours after proposing to girlfriend

A lucky man who had recently proposed to his girlfriend and received a "yes" in response, found himself fortunate once again when he won the lottery just hours later.

Nick Miller, 31, went down on one knee and proposed to Lauren Timmerman..

The following morning, accompanied by his brother, he visited Casey's convenience store in Cascade, Iowa, US, for breakfast.

While ordering coffee, Nick decided to buy a lottery ticket after noticing that the jackpot for Iowa Lottery’s Super 7s Progressive InstaPlay game was nearly $400,000 (£314,000).

He said: “I went back to my truck and the first thing I did was look down to the progressive jackpot game and started matching my winning numbers.

“I had one and then two and then I saw the third one, so I had to do a double-take and check them again.”

He added: “Eventually, I checked them on my mobile app and, sure enough, it was the winner.”

Already overjoyed that his girlfriend said "yes" the day before, Nick then scooped a jackpot of $390,191 (£307,158).

The cash prize had been growing for over two months before Nick’s numbers came up.

The lucky chap, of nearby Bernard, Iowa, said: “I'm ready for the next parts of life, I guess.

“There is the wedding and a house to start doing some work on.

“It will definitely go a long way toward both of those.”

Last month, a 73-year-old woman won the jackpot while trying a new lottery game for the first time.

Ruth Salvatore, who comes from Grants Pass, Oregon, US, bought five tickets for the Win for Life draw on 5 June.

Ruth learned that she had scooped the jackpot while scanning her last ticket.

She will now receive an annual payment of $52,000 (£40,879) from Oregon Lottery for the rest of her life.

Ruth said she is celebrating her 52nd wedding anniversary with her husband, Ed this month, making 52 a very special number for the couple.
