A lucky man has won $50,000 playing the lottery after buying an extra scratchcard by mistake.
The 40-year-old man, who has not been named, from Beltsville, Maryland, US, had allocated $100 to play the lottery.
He reportedly spent $50 on his usual draw games, deciding to spend the remaining money on scratch-offs at a 7-Eleven in Burtonsville.
The man decided to buy a Hot 777 scratch-off but accidentally bought a second one which turned out to be the winning $50,000 ticket.
A statement from the Maryland Lottery on Wednesday, May 31, said: "What a payday! A Beltsville man found a blend of Lottery luck and player error turned his $100 allocation of Lottery games into a $50,000 Hot 777 pay-out.
"The 40-year-old found his lucky Hot 777 scratch-off waiting at 7-Eleven #23691 located at 15585 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville.
"He spent $50 on his usual draw games and decided to spend the other $50 he had allocated on scratch-offs."
The statement continued: "The Prince George’s County resident was immediately drawn to the new $20 Hot 777 game and decided to try it. He intended to buy just one but accidentally selected two scratch-offs.
The accidentally purchased instant ticket was the $50,000 winner.
"He learned of his big win sitting in his car, only moments after leaving the Montgomery County store. The winner immediately took a photo of his lucky scratch-off and sent the photo to his wife."
The lucky winner told lottery officials that he and his wife of 10 years plan to use the prize money to pay off some debts.
It comes after a woman scooped $2million on a scratchcard after she claimed she was sent a sign by her late dad to buy the winning ticket.
The winner, who has not been named, said she found a penny outside her home in Maryland, US, and believed it was a sign from her dad to buy a ticket - after he always dreamed of winning the lottery.
She said: "The penny was laying heads up. That means it is a lucky penny. We knew it was a penny from heaven."
The woman has confirmed she will share her winnings with her family - as that's what her dad would have wanted.
She revealed her dad played lottery games all the time and had always wanted to win enough money to take care of his family.
The lucky winner decided to purchase a $30 Cash is King instant card at the Hub City Liquors store in her home town.
After getting her hands on the ticket she almost used a random quarter to scratch it off before realising she should use the coin outside her home.
Just moments later she uncovered a huge $2 million panel under one of the numbers on her ticket.
She immediately called her sister to share the exciting news, and the pair collected the money at lottery headquarters in Baltimore earlier this week.
