Lucas Moura identifies Tottenham's vital mistake vs Southampton and what Antonio Conte must fix

Lucas Moura gave an honest verdict of Tottenham's performance after their 3-2 defeat to Southampton on Wednesday night.

Spurs had a one goal lead on two occasions during the game, but two goals in two minutes from Ralph Hasenhuttl's side bagged them the three points.

It was a poor performance from the Lilywhites, who are seventh in the league and now four points behind fourth place West Ham, although they do have three games in hand over their rivals.

Antonio Conte's side have a busy couple of weeks ahead as they have four matches left to play in February, including a trip to the Etihad.

The game was the first Premier League defeat at home under the Italian and he gave his assessment in his post match press conference after the tie.

"For sure we have to be disappointed because after our first half where we struggled a lot and I think they were good but I think we made many, many mistakes, many mistakes, especially with the ball," Conte said.

"We have to be more accurate but I know very well this season and I repeat, we are going to struggle to get three points."

With just 20 minutes to go, Tottenham found the net through Son Heung-min and there was hope that they were going to secure a much needed three points, but two goals inside the final ten minutes of the game ended that hope for the Lilywhites.

After the match, Moura gave an honest assessment of his side's performance.

"No one expected this," he admitted in his post match interview with Tottenham. "It was a good opportunity for us. Two games at home and when you have two games at home you need to think about six points and today was not out best game.

"We didn't play well. We were too passive. Too much space for them and they played really well."

The Brazilian highlighted a key boost that Spurs have already failed to take advantage of, amid their busy fixture schedule.

The Lilywhites' next game is against Wolves on Sunday, another home game, but after that they have to travel to play Man City, Burnley and Leeds and so the matches against Southampton and the upcoming one against Bruno Lage's side were both key opportunities to get closer to securing a top four spot.

"We could score two goals, to be one goal up twice during the game but that's [the] Premier League, you cannot sleep [for] even one second," Moura added.

"They score two goals in [two] minutes, it cannot happen. [We] need to learn. It's a bad day for us.

"Even when you're in a bad day you need to compete. You need to have attitude. You need to work and I think we did," he said.

"We worked well, even if it was not our best day technically, tactically. We worked and could score two goals but we need to know how to keep the result and we didn't."

The 29-year-old also didn't have his greatest game, despite picking up an assist for Son Heung-min's goal and being involved in the build-up for the home side's first goal.

However he had just 65.5 per cent passing accuracy, one shot and just one key pass, and was dispossessed on a number of occasions.

In his post match interview, Moura did reveal what he believes was Spurs' biggest mistake of the game and what they now need to do, going forward.

"It's a day to learn because it's Premier League and also I need to say we had at least two or three chances to kill the game and we miss it," he explained. "I think it was our biggest mistake today.

"We need to show our reaction quickly. No time to cry. Lets start tomorrow [Thursday]."

Conte won't have much time to prepare his side for a hopefully positive reaction as Spurs' next match is on Sunday and will again be a key chance for Tottenham to get all three points.
