His cross was met at the near post by Emi Buendia, who headed it past Jordan Pickford to give Villa the lead at half-time.

Digne's exit from Goodison Park came after a falling out with manager Rafa Benitez, who was sacked by the club last Sunday.

The defender shared a heartfelt message on social media after his move to Villa Park was confirmed, where he described it as a love affair that had been 'destroyed'.

BT Sport announced on commentary that Everton and Merseyside Police were looking into the incident while, the PA system at Goodison Park announced after that anyone caught throwing bottles will be 'arrested and banned'.
