The Lowry is throwing open its doors this weekend, with a host of performances, dance classes and other activities, and nearly all of them for free. It happens this Sunday from 9am to 4pm in and around the famous Salford theatre.
Budding actors will be able to take a tour around the backstage areas of the Lyric Theatre from 9am to 1pm, with no booking required for the drop-in sessions. At 12pm and 3pm, there will be a performance of Scrum in the plaza outside, a hip hop dance theatre performance which immerses itself with its audience.
Those who enjoy that can then experience a virtual reality version of the performance, called Scrum VR, with a 10-minute short film featuring VR headsets at The Quays Club from 11am to 3.30pm. There will be storytelling from local children’s author Jess Taylor from 11am, and Crafty Families, an artist-led all day crafting workshop from 10am.
Elsewhere, there’s a dance class based on the hit West End musical Six, to celebrate the show’s return to Salford, hula hooping workshops, a Bollywood taster dance session, and a dance and drawing workshop for families lead by the award-winning dance company Anatomical.
For younger kids, there’s a Gruffalo storytelling hour that’s free to drop in from 3.30pm.
There are a few activities for adults only too, with a 4Sisters gin tasting masterclass at 12 noon, to celebrate the launch of the Salford distillery’s L.S. Lowry gin, though this has to be booked and costs £5.
Details of the open day events can be found at the Lowry website.
