Team WRT have claimed a one-two Bathurst 12-hour finish, while Supercars team owner Stephen Grove has suffered a back injury following a horror crash.

The BMW outfit of drivers Augusto Farfus and brothers Kelvin and Sheldon van der Linde crossed the finish line in the #32 GT3 car at Mount Panorama after 306 laps on Sunday.

They enjoyed a 10.245-second buffer ahead of the Team WRT sister car headlined by legendary MotoGP rider Valentino Rossi.

SunEnergy1 Racing was third-fastest in the 22-car field that was whittled down to 17, while defending winner Matt Campbell was sixth.

It was a maiden victory for the #32 trio, with the van der Linde brothers competing together for the first time in a BMW.

"That was the hardest two hours of my life," Kelvin said after his final stint to the finish line.

Sheldon added: "I am super happy. I've been wanting to win this race for the last three years."

But an airborne crash involving Grove Racing's competing boss cast a gloom over Team WRT's win.

Side-on contact from SunEnergy1 driver Kenny Habul sent Grove, then eighth, into the concrete wall at Skyline and spinning in the air.

Grove almost went over the barrier but his car managed to land on its wheels.

A fire began near the left-front railing but Grove was able to exit the car and was later taken to Orange Hospital.

"Initial tests have revealed damage to his back," a Grove Racing statement said.

"Steve is in good spirits and looks forward to getting back to the track again."

Unsure of the full extent of his injury, Grove will undergo further tests at Sydney's Westmead Hospital.

Two-time Bathurst 12-hour winner Habul did not sustain a penalty, with officials ruling the matter a racing incident.

Supercars legend Craig Lowndes was forced to bow out just 90 minutes into the event.

Running 10th at the time, Lowndes broke the drive shaft of the #222 Mercedes AMG GT3 car after hitting the wall inside the Dipper.

He was sharing the Scott Taylor Motorsport car with current Supercars drivers, Tickford duo Cam Waters and Thomas Randle.

Three-time Supercars champion Lowndes was chasing a third 12-hour victory to go with his seven Bathurst 1000 wins.

Supercars young gun Broc Feeney's afternoon was cut short in the seventh hour when the Jamec Racing entrant suffered a failure with co-driver Ricardo Feller at the wheel.

Arise Racing trio Chaz Mostert, Daniel Serra and reigning Supercars champion Will Brown looked a shot of finishing second, but a fuel shortage forced them to pit in the final hour.

Debutant Ryan Sorenson got his own taste of the unrelenting nature of the Mount Panorama circuit just moments after Lowndes's exit.

Sorenson, in the #25 McLaren Artura GT4, spun out at McPhillamy Park, crashed into the wall and collected Marcel Zallou on the rebound.

The McLaren driver was taken to hospital, while Zalloua finished last with teammates Sergio Pires and Scott Andrews.

Sorenson was released from hospital later on Sunday.
