CHON BURI: Pattaya City is redecorating, painting murals on its infamous Walking Street to attract tourists.
Inspecting the painting on Tuesday, Pattaya deputy mayor Manote Nongyai said a contractor was about to finish murals on a 500-square-metre section on Walking Street. The images feature marine life - including a giant shark - and had yet to be coated, he said.
The same contractor would complete painting another 500 square metres in the next 20 days. Mr Manote said he hoped the "street art" would be a new landmark and attract and impress visitors to Pattaya.
The painting would later be expanded farther along Walking Street, the deputy mayor said.
Pattaya City had yet to work out measures to conserve the street murals, said Mr Manote. That was because Walking Street was open to traffic at day and officials would also have to prevent liquid waste from tarnishing the artwork, he said.
Many Thai and foreign tourists have already arrived to take pictures and video clips of the artistically-enhanced Walking Street
