Love Island viewers praise Iain Stirling for 'roasting' the government over partygate

Iain Stirling made a cheeky political joke during Tuesday night's episode of Love Island, much to the delight of ITV2 viewers.

The Scottish comedian, 34, managed to reference the infamous partygate within seconds of the most recent installment of the dating show airing, as he recapped Monday night's action.

The villa residents farewell to Afia Tonkmor during the first episode of the week, after new boy Jacques O'Neill opted to couple up with Paige Thorne over her.

As Iain recalled Afia wheeling her suitcase out of the Spanish villa, he took the opportunity to poke fun at Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the current U.K government.

"These suitcases are very roomy this year these hold 20 outfits," the dad-of-one began in his voiceover.

"Or if you work at no.10 downing street then 10 bottles of prosecco..."

Partygate is a political scandal regarding the parties and other gatherings of government and Conservative Party staff held during the COVID-19 pandemic - with bottles of prosecco being involved in the illegal shenanigans.

It's claimed staff working for Home Secretary Priti Pratel 'mingled' and 'drank prosecco' at the Home Office during lockdown last year, alongside many other reported breaches of the government's own lockdown laws.

Despite Love Island being a light entertainment show - not normally known for its political commentary - viewers were delighted to hear Iain get a dig in against the rule-breaking politicians.

"iain is not holding back on roasting the government and i lovvvvveeeee iiiitttttt #LoveIsland," one happy fan took to Twitter to share on Tuesday night.

"iain I have not recovered from partygate to laugh at these jokes," another added, with a third penning: "'or if you work at 10 downing street, 30 bottles of prosecco’ i cba with iain [multiple laughing-face emojis]."

Love Island's launch earlier this month saw the ITV2 series attract its highest viewing figures for an opening episode since 2019.

Ratings for first offering from the eight series of the dating show has risen to 5.0 million viewers across all devices (including catch up across TV, mobile, PC and tablet), up on last year by +0.2m.

According to ITV, Love Island's premiere on June 6 was a hit with 16-34s - avergaing 1.8m TV viewers with a 61.6% share of viewing, making it the second most watched programme so far this year for that demographic.

* Love Island, tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox.
