Love Island's Shaughna calls show 'vile' as 'humiliating' challenge left her sobbing

Love Island's Shaughna Phillips called the dating competition 'vile' and revealed she cried over one humiliating challenge.

The star appeared on the winter series of the ITV2 show and said she begged producers for her not to do a sexy dance in a bodysuit in front of the male islanders.

In every series, contestants put on racy costume and perform sexy dances while the opposite sex gets their heart rates monitored.

And speaking about the task, Shaughna claimed the stars don't get to choose what they wear or what song they dance to and her outfit made her feel insecure over her legs as she suffers from lipoedema.

"I cried from lunchtime to the minute I walked out [to dance]," Shaughna said on the Should I Delete That podcast.

"I said to them [show producers], ‘I will go out naked in nipple tassels, as long as you give me trousers, tights, or thigh-high boots. I will do whatever you want’.

"And I was the only girl that had none of that. I said to them, ‘I might just walk. I can’t do this’."

The star went on to confess she begged the producers to not make her wear a skimpy outfit and called the process 'mean' and said it was 'so vile'.

"I was crying, I was going, ‘Please, you don’t understand. Please'."

Shaughna added: "I was really struggling with swollen legs because [of] the different altitude over there [South Africa]. I was crying because I felt like rubbish, I was crying because I was embarrassed.”

The star claimed the other girls got to wear tights or trousers. She was the only one with her bare legs showing.

Mirror Online has contacted ITV for comment.

In 2020, Shaughna made the decision to have liposuction on her calves after she was diagnosed with the medical condition lipoedema - an abnormal accumulation of fat in the legs.

Shaughna has been open about the realities of filming for Love Island and recently shared that she was suffering from body dysmorphia when she appeared on the show.

In struggles to 'accept herself', the TV personality said she had been on diets since the age of 14 believing that 'food is the enemy'.

Speaking to OK! Magazine, she discussed her past 'terrible eating habits' and the extreme diets she has tried - including eating less than 500 calories in a day.

Shaughna, who lasted 33 days in Casa Amor two years ago, criticised the role of teenage magazines in offering articles on losing weight and 'holiday diet tips', claiming she was taught from a young age that 'food is the enemy'.

"I definitely think I had body dysmorphia in Love Island because I was so insecure," she said.
